We’ve barely unpacked from QuiltCon, and suddenly, it’s March 1, also known as the start of National Craft Month, so our next show recap focuses on crafting with wool. We invited QuiltCon attendees to enjoy a sit-and-stitch break to create a few small, colorful layered embellishments with us. Wool pennies are traditionally joined together to create pennyrugs, but they also make fun individual embellishments! They’re also a great way to practice embroidery stitches – just stack a few, then secure and decorate them with blanket stitches, French knots, running stitches and more… Sew one to your garment, quilt, handbag, pillow, make a coin purse or add a pin back for cute wool jewelry! One stitcher plans to make her penny into a luggage tag, while another will be adding a wool penny tea bag pocket to her tea cozy! Everyone enjoyed the chance to do a bit of handstitching with bright colors, a bit of a Zen moment for those on quilt overload.
Of course, crafting is always a lot more fun with friends, and we’re grateful to our friends at Aurifilfor their beautiful threads and 6-strand floss, to Sizzix for their super-handy Big Shot die cutting machine, and to Clover USAfor sharing their sight-saving embroidery needles ; ).
It looks like one of the top themes emerging from Spring Quilt Market was Butterflies! So we had to share this gorgeous interpretation of the trend by Deirdre Bond-Abel of Hat Creek Quilts. What sets her look apart from the rest? The stunning mix of wool applique on cotton prints, more specifically the Marcus WOOL COLLECTION paired with INTRIGUE prints by Nancy Rink. Deirdre named the quilt pattern, “Borboleta,” the Portuguese word for “butterfly”.
“When I first saw the bright wools at Market last May (2015), I thought “butterfly sampler” so I have been waiting a while to have time to make it. The wools are just divine, the colours so beautiful and the quality of the fabric is first class. The wools combine so beautifully with the Intrigue prints “ Visit www.hatcreekquilts.com.au
A sneak peek from Pati’s office reveals these juicy new wool colors, coming soon to your favorite quilt shop! A range of brights and two heather tones round out the already popular collection, THE SEASONS WOOL COLLECTION ready to be used off the bolt, or felted, using this simple technique.
For creative applique and other techniques for quilts, accessories and more, wool knows no season. Watch for these new additions to appear online in April, and in quilt shops in May!
