When RIT Dye Meets Marcus Wools…

DyedWool-textCOMP…cool things can happen!  I should start by reminding you that we now offer 44 fabulous colors in our woven 100% WOOL COLLECTION, including gorgeous new brights, classic heathers, darks, and midtones. But in the event you choose to further customize your colors, it’s easy to do with RIT Dye.  You can dye the wool yardage overall, or experiment with custom ombres and shaded effects inspired by nature.

Just for fun, I took a cut of our Cream wool and transformed it using RIT liquid dye in “Camel”.  BONUS:  I loved the fact that I could felt and re-color the wool in one process!!  The 100% wool content accepted the dye easily and evenly.

Not up to dyeing it yourself? Here’s a peek at just a few of the 44 colors available in your favorite quilts shops now, plus free wool projects —WoolsScreenSHot

A Future Quilter is Born ; )

CelineWe’re pleased to announce the arrival of Celine, the newest member of the Marcus family,
and first granchild of our Director of Marketing, Pati Violick.  They say nothing gets you stitching like the birth of a grandbaby, and Pati has already started to choose fabrics for the First Quilt, a mix of orange and hot pink — along with grey, they make up the nursery palette.  I have a feeling this little girl will learn to appreciate the joy of hexies and paper piecing before long…  –lisa

Anyway, Welcome to Celine, and Congratulations to “Grandma Pati” and family!  We can’t wait to see what you whip up with Nancy Rink’s INTRIGUE prints…

Past Endearments, as Interpreted by Lynn Wilder

We always love to see what Lynn Wilder’s been up to, and this particular blog posts shows off her interpretation of Judie Rothermel’s PAST ENDEARMENTS collection. Judie’s mix of cool pinks and blues with warm neutrals create a beautiful trans-seasonal look.  Once you’ve taken it all from this in-progress photo, be sure to read the full post at her Sew’n Wild Oaks blog, because there Lynn explains her Patchwork Math method for creating the blocks.  Thanks, Lynn!

We’re Seeing RED, and Loving It!

It’s not that red hasn’t always been a favorite color among stylemakers, but we love how it continues to evolve and reinvent itself in every possible category.  Soon we’ll introduce gorgeous new RED collections from Paula Barnes and Faye Burgos (stay tuned for details on these) and we already know red-lovers can’t get enough of Pam Buda’s prairie inspiration!

we're seeing red...and loving it

So we thought we’d put together a visual of some favorite reds among the Marcus crew — the Brick, Madder, Tomato, Lipstick, or New Car red that excites each of us the most. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

1- Stephanie is beaming in her first red car. She says it changes shades of red depending on the light, so it’s like she got a two-fer…

2- Mechelle, our resident foodie, prefers to eat & drink her reds rather than drive them – Red Velvet cupcake, anyone?

3- Lisa is transfixed by brick red Ghanaian batiks like this one from her personal stash; creases add to their authenticity.

4- Brandy shows off her vacation home – not really! (Photo: www.alexpapachristidis.com)

5- One of the new looks Mechelle is saving for later in the season – as always, she’s on-trend, pairing red with neutral greys & cream…

6- The Japanese maple on Lisa’s front lawn needs no explanation

7- Faye always loved the high energy of red. Her “Elvis” Beanie Baby is a  a gift from her cousin, Dell that makers her smile

8- Laura shows off her most prized red shoes…and how well they frame her picture-perfect pedi.

9- There’s usually something fun and trendy to be found on Pati’s desk, at random. I couldn’t have planned this better if I tried…

Which one speaks to you the loudest?  Vote for your favorite in the Comments below for the chance to win a “Random Reds” fabric pack. (They’re so random, I haven’t even selected them yet, but you’ll love them…) We’ll draw one lucky name next Wed!

As Memorial Day Approaches…

Here in the US, we’ll celebrate Memorial Day this coming Monday, May 25.  Yesterday, I came across a Facebook post (in the Quilting group) by Tiffany Pellizzari, and am sharing one of the photos with her permission.  She lovingly recreated our LOVE & GLORY quilt for her father who was fighting cancer, and who passed on just five days after it was draped over him. It was also used at his memorial service, shown here.

Tiffany PellizzariQUILT“I hadn’t known how important it is to quilt with love until you know the person receiving it feels the love when they use it. My step mother asked to use the quilt at his memorial as you see here. It ended up being a great representation of his personality — eagles and patriotic colors on the front and vintage planes on the back (he was a pilot). Thanks for letting me share and helping me to learn something I am forever going to cherish being able to do.”

Tiffany, we are sorry for your loss, but are sure he found comfort in your beautiful quilt.   This weekend and always, we join all of our quilting friends in honoring those who have served, and continue to serve our country.
