Yes, You Can Still Join the Sew-Along!

We thank you for the enthusiastic response to the first installment of our Marcus Fabrics Designer Sew-Along, featuring Pam Buda’s gorgeous block!  And just to be clear, though we launched the SAL on August 1, it’s definitely not too late to start!   We suggested that everyone visit each blog and subscribe to their blog posts via email before August 1, so you wouldn’t miss anything, because each designer’s blog post would then come to you via email. You should find a SUBSCRIBE blank on each designer’s blog page.

But you’re also welcome to visit each blog individually week-by-week (one designer per week). Either way, you can then choose to PRINT the instructions each week and stitch at your own pace. One last reminder: Be sure to COMMENT on each weekly blog post to be entered into that designer’s weekly giveaway. They’ve got some great prizes lined up ; ) Enjoy!

Coming Soon…Pam Buda’s A PRAIRIE GATHERING!

prairieGatheringheaderPrairieGatheringWomenDebuting online July 1 is Pam Buda’s latest collection for Marcus, A PRAIRIE GATHERING.  Pam’s ongoing passion for Prairie brings us a wonderful blend of traditional deep red and beige prints that she incorporates into a gorgeous medallion quilt design.  Together the fabrics and quilt pay a year-long tribute to the women who used needle & thread to affect change.

Pam’s new Quarterly Quilt Series is built around 4 Quarters, with (3) Chapters in each. The quilt grows gradually from the center medallion section, as compared to standard BOM’s where blocks are sewn separately then joined together.  The 12-month program begins in January, with fabrics available in your favorite quilt shops beginning  November.  Read more on Pam’s blog now, and check out Marcus Fabrics on July 1 to view the fabrics and more!

Great Girlfriend Getaways with Pam Buda

Road trip, anyone??  For most of us, the only thing better than quilting, is quilting with girlfriends…away from home…with a great workspace…and prepared meals, etc!  With that image in mind, read on to learn more about Pam Buda’s increasingly popular girlfriend getaways:

“Designing original quilts for my company, Heartspun Quilts, and fabric collections for Marcus are dream jobs for sure, but they require me to spend most of my time at home.  Now, I’m a home-body at heart and love working from home, but sometimes a girl just has to get out and be with girlfriends!!

I also love to teach, and traveling all over the US not only gets me out of the house, but allows me to spend the day with very special people….quilters!!

Most of the time, I visit quilt guilds and quilt shops, but once or twice a year, I partner with my girlfriend, Lynne Hagmeier, and we host our own retreats!  We call them Great Girlfriend Getaways, and so far, we’ve cruised to Alaska, and explored St. Augustine, FL, all while getting to know each other, laughing, sharing tips and tricks, and making lots of new friends!”

Their next Getaway retreat takes participants to Mackinaw City, MI, September 8-12, 2014.  They chose this destination because “it’s just a ferry ride away from historic and charming Mackinaw Island, where life is a bit slower and motorized vehicles are not allowed!”

See the brochure for full details, including the FOUR workshop projects being offered, hotel, food, pricing information, and other goodies. A ticket to ride the ferry to the Island is included!!  Have fun!

Perfect for Primo Plaids & More…

Did you catch this gorgeous quilt in the new issue of McCall’s Quilting (March/April 2014)?  This pic doesn’t quite do it justice, but it’s a perfect design for so many of our PRIMO PLAIDS…or MOLLY B’s CLASSIC WOVENS…or PRAIRIE DOBBIES & PRAIRIE WOVENS… Quilt designer Sherri Bain Driver mentions that she used mostly flannels (think Primos) yet smooth cottons will work as well. We love her creative cutting and piecing of plaids and stripe, and the subtle yet colorful result.

Pam Buda Discusses “Prairie Stitches”

We caught up with Pam and got some extra insights into her new PRAIRIE STITCHES line, and her love for all things Prairie! Here’s what she shared…

You might be surprised to learn where fabric designers get inspirations for new fabric collections. I looked to my collection of antique quilts and vintage fabrics for Prairie Stitches.
MB Blog _ 2-2014 _ Prairie Stitches Fabric Design
The main floral print in the line came from a vintage piece of fabric I picked up at an antique show several years ago.

What drew me to it was its simplistic, country styling which is at the heart of my prairie style.  The floral motif is about as large a floral as I like to use, and I started to image it in other colors.
With some fabrics, imagining the possibilities can be the most difficult part, and that is at the heart of the job of fabric design.   I knew what I wanted the end result to be, and worked hand in hand with Marcus’ design director, Faye Burgos, to make it happen.

Notice the original antique fabric has a solid dark brown background.
MB Blog _ 2-2014 _ multiI decided to add a little texture to the backgrounds of my prints which gives a soft, subtle feel to an otherwise flat background.

There are slight differences in the leaves and flowers on each of the prints, to best show off the floral motif on the different colored backgrounds.

I’m just delighted about the way it all turned out!

I’m working on the quilt I designed for this collection, called Ada’s Prairie Stitches, and loving how it’s all coming together! Both the fabric collection, and my new pattern will be in quilt shops in April!

Thanks, Pam!  Visit Pam Buda online at HeartspunQuilts.com

Have You Seen the Cover Of McCall’s Quilting?

…The first issue of 2014 (Jan/Feb) just hit my desk, and we’re thrilled to see Nancy Rink’s quilt made the cut!  It’s on the chair, third from the left, and it features PARTY OF TWELVE by Judie Rothermel, PIN MONEY by Pam Buda and PAULA BARNES COMPANIONS.  Check out this full view of the quilt, called “Clara’s Pride”...with just two block designs and a beautiful range of repro prints, we think it’s a great way to begin the quilting year!  Congratulations, Nancy!  — lisa s
